What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is one of the five most common skin concerns for women. It is a harmless response to UV exposure, injury, and inflammatory skin conditions. Nevertheless, these pesky brown spots and patches make our skin look blotchy, hindering us from achieving that perfect skin we desire.

What causes Hyperpigmentation?

UV exposure

The main culprit of hyperpigmentation issues is regular UV exposure. Exposure to UV radiation triggers melanin production in your skin, which is a protective response to help you avoid skin damage. Melanin absorbs the energy from UX rays to shield your skin cells. It also has anti-oxidative properties! However, if you get regular sun exposure without taking sufficient precautions to protect your skin from the harmful effects of UV radiation, your melanin production goes into overdrive. The resulting widespread deposits of melanosomes causes pigment patches to appear on frequently exposed areas like your cheeks, foreheads, and arms. Freckles and aging spots are typical examples of sun-induced pigmentation.

Hormonal imbalance

Hormonal changes due to pregnancy, disease, or certain medications can result in uneven melanosome deposits known as melasma, which results from an interplay of genes, UV exposure, and various hormonal factors. Melasma can occur in men too. In many cases, melasma clears up after you stop the aggravating medication after your baby is delivered.  But many patients have patches that persist.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

If you had some form of inflammatory damage to your skin, such as severe acne, burns, scratches, cuts, and other traumas, melanin deposits would have developed and led to some pigmentation. These pigmentation marks are part of the skin’s reparative process, but the issue is that they often remain even after the skin has healed. Their appearance ranges from pink to brown, and they can take months to fade. In some cases, they do not disappear completely. Asians tend to be more susceptible to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Additionally, the risk factor is much higher after agitative treatments that use strong chemicals or laser peels.
